Collaborative Domain Modelling with Event Storming
A practical workshop for aligning business, product, and tech around a complex domain, making hidden assumptions visible, and enabling better decisions about product, features, and architecture.
In this hands-on workshop, you will learn how to build a shared domain model of a complex domain, using a technique called Event Storming. Event Storming is a collaborative brainstorming workshop to visualize a domain based on domain events – things that happen in that domain.
Event Storming helps build a shared, high-level understanding of a domain and the user’s perspective. It starts where you currently are, visualizing what is and generating insights in opportunities, friction, and sources of complexity. It informs strategic decisions on what to focus on and how to structure the system’s architecture.
Having a shared understanding of your domain is key to delivering software products that make a difference.
This workshop is hands-on, learning by doing. We will introduce Event Storming and where it comes from (Domain Driven Design). You will work in small groups practicing Event Storming on a complex domain. We will reflect frequently and share several modelling guidelines. We bring in practical experience in Domain Driven Design, software architecture, and doing collaborative modelling.
We will discuss how Event Storming fits in your software development process and how it relates to practices like user story mapping and dimensional planning.
We can run this workshop as a half-day or a full-day session. In a half-day session, we will focus on creating a shared big picture of the domain. In a full-day session, we will be able to cover more modelling guidelines and also create a first architecture sketch.
We can run this workshop in two ways:
- A training session, where participants learn Event Storming and collaborative modelling using a prepared case.
- A facilitated domain workshop, where we work together on your domain, learning Event Storming along the way; the outcomes then include a shared visual model of your domain; insights in opportunities, risks, and disagreements; an architecture sketch including candidate system boundaries.
Benefits
For your organization, this workshop helps to:
- increase shared understanding of the domain across business, product and development;
- create better alignment between tech and business;
- develop a shared language between stakeholders and reduce misunderstanding;
- make hidden assumptions explicit;
- improve the quality of architecture decisions.
Learning objectives
After participating in this workshop, attendees will be able to:
- explain why and when to use event storming and collaborative modelling;
- participate effectively in an event storming workshop;
- run an event storming workshop with their team;
- make domain-informed architecture decisions about system boundaries;
- explain how event storming brings fits with other practices.
Audience & prerequisites
Event storming works best if all the different roles involved are in the room – developers, testers, product owners, product managers, support, sales. Every role has its own perspective, which adds to the shared understanding.
No technical knowledge is required.
