Global day of code retreat, October 8 in Tilburg
On 8 december we are celebrating the global day of code retreat as part of our devnology sponsorship. Join us for this free event in the QWAN Tilburg office for a day of programming for fun and learning. A code retreat is a day-long variation on the coding dojo theme.
We will be doing the classic ‘game of life’ as an exercise. In a number of rounds we will do the same exercise, each time with different constraints. You get to work with a different partner each round, so you can learn a lot in a day. After each round we will demonstrate our work to each other and discuss challenges and surprises we had while doing the exercise. You can choose the programming language you want to work in. It is handy if you bring a laptop with your favorite development environment. If you don’t have a laptop, that is no problem. You can pair with someone who brought a laptop, or use one of ours; we’ll provide Ruby, Python, C# and Java to work with. If you feel more adventurous you can pair with one of us to do exercises in Clojure, Scheme or Smalltalk. Marc Evers, Rob Westgeest and Willem van den Ende will be present to facilitate.
You can register at the devnology site We hope you’ll join us!

Agile Engineering & Certified Scrum Developer
We are now officially a Scrum Registered Education Provider: we offer the 3 day Agile Engineering training course, which qualifies for the three day technical skills course of the Certified Scrum Developer program.
This means that if you complete the Agile Engineering course and a Certified Scrum Master or Certified Scrum Product Owner course, you can qualify for Certified Scrum Developer.
We will be working closely together with our colleagues from Zilverline to offer a complete CSD program consisting of a two day Certified Scrum Master course and the three day in depth, hands on Agile Engineering course. This program will provide developers with a good foundation for high quality, sustainable agile software development.
Would you like to know more? Do you wish to improve development quality with our CSD program? Don’t hesitate to contact us.

QWAN supports Alpe d’HuZes again in 2010
Alpe d’HuZes is an event where cyclists cycle to collect money for the fight against cancer, by climbing the legendary Alpe d’Huez at least six times in one day. An almost impossible challenge. Nonetheless quite a few participants managed to achieve this in 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009, even a number of (former) cancer patients. In 2009, 6 million euros were collected. This year, the goal is to reach 10 million!
This year, we are sponsoring Pim van den Heuvel and his team Logica & Friends.

Devnology Community Day
QWAN will run two workshops at the Devnology Community Day on 7 November:
- Give your code some love – we will lead participants through a number of code fragments that seem alright at
first sight, but that can still be improved in our opinion – they just need a little love. - Flying horses – cleaner code in other languages – where we explore how you typically solve problems in different languages and how it can inspire your to do things differently in your current working environment.

Story Testing at the Scandinavian Agile conference
We will run a workshop on story testing and working in a behaviour driven way at the Scandinavian Agile Conference, which will take place on 15 and 16 October, in Helsinki (Finland).
This workshop is meant for both developers and product owners:
- As a developer, I want to know story testing frameworks and practice one of them, so that I can test stories using the examples the product owner writes together with me.
- As a product owner, I want understand the process of testing stories and practice specifying acceptance criteria using example scenarios, so that I can help developers develop what I want.
